The weather lifted so I was able to get an early start today. Great weather with no rain, tailwinds for the most part. The road between Florence and Mapleton was the best I have seen so far. Wide shoulders, very little road debris, and resurfaced in the past few years. After Mapleton I veered off the main road to Eugene and there were no shoulders but no traffic as well. At one time I probably went 20 minutes without seeing a car in either direction and that includes the tiny towns I passed through. Made it to Eugene in great time.
I did not like Eugene. The bike maps and trails were confusing, the bike routes littered with two way stops signs, and bike paths narrow, but they did exist. Lots of homeless people and encampments along the bike paths and near the university of Oregon.
I rode north of Eugene to Coburg to camp and to get back onto the main transamerican bike route. Overall, it was a good day for a ride in the countryside.
